How to prevent A Rodent problem
The best way to deal with a rodent infestation is to stop it from happening in the first place. Rodent prevention includes:
- Sealing off entry points: rodents can enter your home or business through cracks in the foundation, openings around doors and window frames, gaps in baseboards, utility lines, and more. Seal and block these openings wherever you can.
- Putting food away: Keep pantry foods in sealable, airtight containers at all times. Keep garbage in sealable plastic bags and take it out to the garbage every night.
- Repairing plumbing issues: rodents are in your home looking for food and water. Make sure you clean up spills immediately and repair plumbing leaks ASAP.
Rodents in Southern IL
Rodents are one of the most hardy groups of animals on Earth, with the ability to survive in all different types of environments throughout the world. While some rodents have cute appearances and can be kept as domestic pets, they are widely considered pests for numerous reasons.
Their habit of getting into food, destroying property, and affecting the health of the people they’re near, makes rodent pest control an important concern for homeowners. The most common type of rodent in Illinois are mice.
Mice in Illinois
Because deer mice are known carriers of Hantavirus, which causes the extremely dangerous and sometimes fatal Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, you shouldn’t take any chances with handling mouse carcasses or droppings. Trust the professionals at Meagher Pest to remove mice from your home. Mice can really impact the sanitation of a home;
1. Mice waste products can transmit pathogens for human diseases like; salmonella, food poisoning, rickettsial pox, meningitis, ringworm, and dermatitis.
2. Mice will chew and gnaw through; walls, baseboards, and other materials to create access tunnels through your home. If mice chew through electrical wires, a fire hazard is possible
3. The mousy odor they carry, not to mention the smell of urine and droppings, is highly unpleasant.
rats in Illinois
The best way to take care of an existing rat problem is by catching the problem right away, before it becomes permanent. If you think you may have a rat infestation in your home or business, the signs include:
- Droppings: One of the first indicators of a rat presence is their droppings. Rat droppings can be anywhere between ½ to ¾ inches in size
- Urine: Another indicator of rat presence is urine trails or puddles of stains on walls and baseboards that look like grease. Rat urine leaves a musty scent, most noticeable in smaller enclosed rooms and when humidity is present
- Evidence of chewing: Rats are nibblers who can bite through all but glass, metal, and thick plastic. If chew marks are found on snack boxes, pet food bags or other food containers, a rat infestation is likely
- Nesting: Rat nests can often be found in warm, dry areas of the house such as under refrigerators, stoves, and dishwashers. Nesting materials include grass, fabric, furniture, cotton, and twigs
